The coastal train takes around two to three hours and is one of the most scenic rides in Sri Lanka, running right beside the sea. Times are approximate and depend on traffic and stops.

By private car: the easiest way

A private car with a driver is the simplest way to reach Galle, especially with luggage. Your driver picks you up at your hotel in Colombo or Negombo, or at the airport, and drops you at your hotel in Galle Fort, Unawatuna or nearby.

The fast route: the Southern Expressway

The Southern Expressway runs from the edge of Colombo to Galle and beyond. From central Colombo, most of the journey time is getting out of the city; once on the expressway, it's a fast, smooth drive through green countryside. From the airport, the Outer Circular Highway links to the Southern Expressway, so you avoid the city centre.

The scenic route: the coast road

The old Galle Road follows the coast through towns and fishing villages. It's slower and busier, but full of things to see. With a private driver, you can mix the two: take the expressway part of the way, then drive along the coast for the most interesting stretch.

Why choose a private car?

  • Door-to-door travel, including airport pick-up at any hour
  • The choice of a fast expressway trip or a slow coastal day
  • Stops whenever you like
  • An air-conditioned car on a hot day

You can book a single transfer, or include this journey in a trip with a private driver. See also our airport transfers.

Best stops on the coast road

  • Mount Lavinia: a city beach just south of Colombo with a historic colonial hotel.
  • Kalutara: the large white hollow stupa beside the river. See places to visit in Kalutara.
  • Bentota: wide beaches and boat trips on the Bentota River. See Bentota and kayaking.
  • Kosgoda: sea turtle hatcheries. See turtle hatching.
  • Madu Ganga, Balapitiya: a mangrove river with small islands and a cinnamon island. See lagoons.
  • Ambalangoda: traditional mask workshops. See craft villages.
  • Hikkaduwa: a lively beach town with turtles in the shallows. See Hikkaduwa.
  • Peraliya Tsunami Memorial: a quiet memorial to the 2004 tsunami, near Hikkaduwa.

By train: the coastal line

The coastal railway runs from Colombo Fort south along the sea to Galle and Matara. For long stretches, the train runs so close to the water that waves break just below the windows. Express trains take around two hours, slower trains three hours or more. Sit on the right-hand side, facing the direction of travel, for the best sea views.

  • Trains leave from Colombo Fort station. If you're staying near the airport, a road transfer is usually easier.
  • Reserved seats are available on some trains. Unreserved carriages can be very crowded, especially at weekends.
  • Galle station is a short tuk-tuk ride from Galle Fort.

At the time of writing (October 2026), the hill country and Colombo–Kandy lines have disruptions, but the coastal line is separate. Always check the current timetable with Sri Lanka Railways before you travel.

By bus

  • Expressway buses run from the southern edge of Colombo along the Southern Expressway to Galle. They're fast and air-conditioned, taking about one and a half to two hours from the departure point.
  • Ordinary buses run along the Galle Road, stopping in every town. They take three hours or more and can be very crowded.

When to travel

You can travel to Galle all year. The south coast is at its best for beaches from about November to April. From about May to September, the south-west monsoon brings more rain and rougher seas, though Galle Fort itself is lovely all year. Avoid leaving Colombo in the weekday morning and evening rush hours if you can. See the best time to visit Sri Lanka.

What to do in Galle

Galle Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with cobbled streets, colonial buildings, cafés and the ramparts. Highlights include:

  • Walking the ramparts at sunset
  • The lighthouse and Flag Rock
  • Boutique shops, galleries and cafés inside the fort
  • Nearby beaches at Unawatuna and Koggala

See the best things to do in Galle, our Galle day tour and our south coast guide.

Galle as a day trip from Colombo

Galle is close enough for a day trip from Colombo. Leave early, spend the day in the fort and on the ramparts, and return in the evening. See our Galle day tour and day trips from Colombo.

Where to stay

  • Inside Galle Fort: boutique hotels in colonial buildings, within walking distance of everything.
  • Unawatuna: beach hotels and guesthouses, about 15 minutes away.
  • Ahangama and Koggala: quieter beaches and surf, a little further east.

See our guide to where to stay in Sri Lanka.

Continuing your journey

From Galle, many travellers continue along the coast to Mirissa and Tangalle, or inland to Ella and Yala. See Galle to Ella, Colombo to Mirissa and our south coast road trip.

What affects the cost of a private transfer

The cost depends on the vehicle, whether you start in Colombo, Negombo or the airport, any stops you add, expressway tolls and the season. Ask us for a quote that includes everything. See how to book.

Travel tips

  • Leave before 7 am or after 9 am to avoid Colombo's rush hour.
  • Sit on the right on the train for sea views when travelling south.
  • Book train seats early at weekends and holidays.
  • Carry cash for snacks and small shops. See money in Sri Lanka.
  • Walk the ramparts at sunset on your first evening in Galle.

A sample coastal day

  • 8:00 am: leave Colombo and drive south along the coast.
  • 9:30 am: a short stop at the Kalutara stupa.
  • 10:30 am: a boat trip on the Bentota River or the Madu Ganga.
  • 12:30 pm: visit a turtle hatchery in Kosgoda, then lunch.
  • 2:30 pm: see the mask workshops in Ambalangoda.
  • 4:00 pm: arrive in Galle and check in.
  • 5:30 pm: sunset on the fort ramparts.

Travelling with children

The expressway trip is short and easy with children. On the coast road, the turtle hatchery and boat trips are usually favourites. Ask for child seats when you book. See Sri Lanka with kids.

Best forThe experienceComfort and speed

Many travellers take the train for the views and send their luggage ahead with a driver, who meets them in Galle.

Galle Fort in a few hours

If you arrive in the afternoon, you can still see the best of Galle Fort before dinner. Walk in through the old gate, visit the lighthouse and Flag Rock, wander the streets of colonial houses, churches and mosques, and finish on the ramparts as the sun sets over the sea. The fort is small and easy to explore on foot. Keep the next morning for cafés, galleries and a slower look around.

Getting around Galle

Inside the fort, everything is within walking distance. Tuk-tuks wait at the main gate for trips to the station, Unawatuna or the Japanese Peace Pagoda. If you have a driver for your whole trip, they'll take you to the nearby beaches and sights.

Arriving at night

Many flights land late in the evening. The drive to Galle on the expressway is straightforward at night, and your driver will meet you in the arrivals hall with a name sign. If you'd rather not travel after a long flight, spend the first night in Negombo and drive to Galle the next morning, with time to stop on the coast. See the best things to do in Negombo.

Food on the way

The coast road is lined with seafood restaurants, many serving fresh fish, prawns and crab grilled or in curry. In Galle Fort, you'll find everything from rice and curry to cafés and fine dining. Stop for a king coconut on the roadside, the best drink on a hot day. See Sri Lankan food to try.

Safety on the beaches

The sea along this coast can be calm or very rough, depending on the season. Use designated swimming areas with lifeguard guidance where available; local swimmers are not a safety guarantee. Look for flags and avoid river mouths, rocks and rough seas. From about May to September, many beaches are not safe for swimming.

Tip: if you only have one night in Galle, stay inside the fort so you can walk the ramparts at sunset and again at sunrise.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Leaving Colombo in rush hour. It can add an hour or more.
  • Sitting on the wrong side of the train. Sit on the right going south.
  • Rushing the fort. Galle Fort deserves at least half a day.
  • Swimming in rough seas. From about May to September, the sea can be dangerous. Ask locally.
