Quick answer
Sri Lanka's south coast stretches from Hikkaduwa and Galle east to Tangalle and beyond, with golden beaches, surf bays, a Dutch colonial fort and some of the island's best wildlife just inland. The main places are Hikkaduwa, Galle Fort, Unawatuna, Koggala, Weligama, Mirissa, Talalla, Hiriketiya and Tangalle, with Yala, Bundala and Udawalawe national parks a short drive away. The best time to visit is from about November to April, when the sea is calm and the weather is dry. Plan five to seven days to enjoy the coast without rushing.
The south coast is where many travellers end their Sri Lanka trip, and for good reason. After temples, tea estates and mountain trains, there is nothing better than a few days of warm sea, fresh seafood and palm-lined beaches. This guide brings together everything on the south coast: where to go, what each place is like, when to visit, how to get around and how to plan your days.

Wildlife near the south coast
One of the best things about the south coast is how close it is to Sri Lanka's best safari parks:

- Bundala National Park: a wetland park known for birds, especially in the migrant season.

When to visit the south coast
The south coast is at its best from about November to April, when the sea is calm, the skies are mostly clear and the whale-watching season is underway. December to March are the busiest months.
From about May to September, the south-west monsoon brings rougher seas, stronger currents and more rain, especially on the western end of the coast. Swimming is often unsafe at many beaches, and some boat trips stop. If you are travelling in these months, the east coast is usually the better beach choice. See our east coast guide and the best time to visit Sri Lanka.
How to get to the south coast
The Southern Expressway runs from Colombo and the airport area towards the south coast, making the journey much faster than it used to be. Approximate times by car:

- Ella to Mirissa: about 4–5 hours. See Ella to Mirissa

Getting around the south coast
The main coast road links all the beach towns, and most are 15 to 60 minutes apart. A private driver makes it easy to hop between beaches and add safaris. Tuk-tuks are useful for short trips within towns.
