Colombo to Mirissa: How to Get There

Quick answer

The quickest way to get from Colombo to Mirissa is by private car on the Southern Expressway, which takes about two and a half to three hours from Colombo, or about three to three and a half hours from the airport. The coastal train is a scenic, budget option to Weligama, a short tuk-tuk ride from Mirissa, taking around three to four hours. Expressway buses to Matara are the cheapest fast option, followed by a short local bus or tuk-tuk to Mirissa.

By private car: fast and easy

The Southern Expressway has made the journey from Colombo to the south coast much quicker than it used to be. Your driver picks you up at your Colombo hotel or at the airport, joins the expressway and leaves it near Matara or Weligama for the last few kilometres to Mirissa.

Why choose a private car?

  • It is the fastest door-to-door option
  • You can go straight from the airport to the beach after a long flight
  • Your luggage stays with you in an air-conditioned vehicle
  • You can stop at Galle Fort or a beach on the way

You can book a single transfer, or include this journey in a trip with a private driver.

Taking the coast road instead

If you are not in a hurry, ask your driver to take the old coast road, Galle Road, for part of the journey. It is much slower than the expressway but passes fishing villages, beaches and small towns. Many travellers drive down the expressway and come back along the coast, or the other way round.

By train: the scenic coastal railway

The coastal railway runs south from Colombo Fort along the sea to Galle and Matara. For long stretches, the line runs right beside the beach, with views of waves, fishing boats and palm trees from the window. It is one of the most enjoyable train journeys in Sri Lanka.

How to do it

  1. Colombo Fort to Weligama: take a train heading south towards Matara. The journey usually takes around three to four hours, depending on the train.
  2. Weligama to Mirissa: take a tuk-tuk for the short ride to Mirissa.

Tips for the train

  • Sit on the right-hand side of the train when travelling south for the best sea views.
  • Express trains are faster than slower local services, which stop at many small stations.
  • Reserved seats are not always available on this line, and unreserved carriages can be very busy, especially at weekends and holidays.
  • Keep your bags light, as space is limited.
  • Train services in Sri Lanka can change, so check the current timetable and any service notices before you travel.

By bus

Expressway buses

Air-conditioned buses use the Southern Expressway from the south of Colombo to Matara. They are fast and cheap, but you will need to get to the bus terminal in the Kottawa or Makumbura area, south-east of the city centre. From Matara, take a local bus or tuk-tuk along the coast to Mirissa, which takes around 20 minutes.

Ordinary buses

Ordinary buses run along the coast road from central Colombo to Matara, stopping in almost every town. They are very cheap but slow, crowded and hot. They are not a good choice for a long journey with luggage.

Colombo city or the airport?

The airport is north of Colombo, so the journey to Mirissa takes longer from there than from the city centre. Many travellers go straight from the airport to the south coast on their first day. If you arrive late at night, consider staying near the airport in Negombo and travelling the next morning. If you want to see the city, our one day in Colombo guide and Colombo city tour can help.

When to travel

The road and railway run all year, but the season matters for your beach time. Mirissa is at its best from about November to April, when the sea is calm, the weather is mostly sunny and whale watching boats go out. Between about May and October, the south-west monsoon brings rougher seas and more rain. Read our guide to the best time to visit Sri Lanka.

To avoid heavy traffic, try not to leave Colombo during the morning and evening rush hours.

What to do in Mirissa

Mirissa is a relaxed beach town with a curved bay and plenty of cafés. Popular things to do include:

  • Whale watching from about November to April. See whale watching in Sri Lanka.
  • Coconut Tree Hill, a short walk for one of Sri Lanka's most photographed views
  • Surfing at Mirissa or nearby Weligama
  • Snorkelling off the rocks on calm days
  • Day trips to Galle Fort or the quieter bays of Talalla and Hiriketiya

For somewhere to stay, see our guide to where to stay in Sri Lanka.

Continuing your journey

From Mirissa, many travellers continue east along the coast to Tangalle and then inland to Yala National Park or the hill country. If you are travelling from the hills to the beach instead, see our guide to getting from Ella to Mirissa. For a longer trip, our south coast road trip guide is a good place to start.

What affects the cost of a private transfer

The cost depends on the size of the vehicle, whether you start in Colombo or at the airport, any stops you add, highway tolls and the season. If you travel with one of our drivers for your whole trip, this journey is simply one day of it. Ask us for a quote that includes everything. See how to book.

Travel tips

  • Leave early to beat the traffic and arrive with time for the beach.
  • Book whale watching in advance in the peak months.
  • Carry some cash for tuk-tuks, entrance tickets and small cafés. See money in Sri Lanka.
  • Get a local SIM so you can call your driver or a tuk-tuk. See our SIM card guide.

Travelling with children or older travellers

The expressway makes this one of the easiest long journeys in Sri Lanka for families and older travellers. The road is smooth, there are clean rest areas along the way, and the journey is short enough to fit in comfortably between breakfast and lunch. If you have young children, ask us for child seats when you book. Breaking the journey for an hour in Galle Fort gives everyone a chance to stretch their legs before the final stretch to the beach.

Arriving after dark

If your flight lands late in the evening, the drive to Mirissa is still possible on the expressway, but you will arrive tired and miss the scenery. Many travellers prefer to spend their first night near the airport in Negombo and drive south the next morning, stopping in Galle on the way. It turns a tiring late transfer into an enjoyable first day.

Plan the final connection to your Mirissa hotel

The coastal railway reaches stations serving the surrounding area; travellers commonly use Weligama for onward road transport to Mirissa. Check the current service, stopping pattern and final hotel connection before buying tickets. A timetable to Weligama does not include waiting for a tuk-tuk or reaching a property outside the main bay.

For a private transfer, distinguish a Colombo city pickup from an airport pickup and list any Galle stop in the request. A visit to Galle Fort is sightseeing time rather than a free addition to the driving estimate. If arriving after a long flight, consider whether you want a direct hotel journey instead of an extended first travel day.

What to include in a transfer quote request

Give the exact travel date, pickup and drop-off addresses, number of passengers and luggage. If you need a child seat, extra space, an accessible vehicle or a surfboard carrying arrangement, ask specifically and wait for confirmation. State whether you want a direct transfer, sightseeing stops or several days of driver hire; these are different services and need different quotes.

Ask whether fuel, tolls, parking, agreed waiting time and any additional stops are included, without assuming a universal policy. Site tickets, safari jeeps and guided visits are separate unless listed. For an airport connection, share the flight number and airline check-in requirements and allow an appropriate buffer. Driving times are planning estimates affected by traffic, weather, stops and the final hotel location.
