Quick answer

The easiest way to get from Bandaranaike International Airport (Colombo) to Galle is by private car with a driver, using the expressways around Colombo and the Southern Expressway. The journey usually takes about 2.5 to 3 hours, depending on traffic. There's no direct train or bus from the airport to Galle. By public transport, you'd travel into Colombo first, then take the coastal train or an expressway bus to Galle, which takes most of the day with luggage. With a car, you can go straight to your hotel in Galle Fort, Unawatuna or the beaches further south, and stop for lunch on the way.

Many travellers start or end their Sri Lanka trip on the south coast, and Galle is the gateway. This guide explains every way to get there from the airport, journey times, the route, the best stops and tips for arriving after a long flight.

By private carAbout 2.5–3 hours
RouteAirport expressway, the Outer Circular Expressway and the Southern Expressway
Direct trainNone; trains run from Colombo
Direct busNone; expressway buses run from the south of Colombo
Best optionPrivate car with driver
From Galle to UnawatunaAbout 15 minutes
From Galle to MirissaAbout 45 minutes

A private car is the fastest and most comfortable way to reach Galle. Your driver meets you in the arrivals hall with a name board, loads your luggage and takes the expressways south, avoiding most of Colombo's traffic.

Why most travellers choose a car:

  • Door to door, from the arrivals hall to your hotel.
  • Fast, using the expressways for most of the journey.
  • Comfortable, with air-conditioning and space to rest.
  • No changes with luggage.
  • Flexible, with stops whenever you like.

See Sri Lanka airport transfers and our private driver page.

The route

From the airport, drivers usually take the airport expressway towards Colombo, then the Outer Circular Expressway around the city to join the Southern Expressway. The Southern Expressway runs inland, parallel to the coast, with an exit for Galle.

SectionApproximate time
Airport to the Southern ExpresswayAbout 45 minutes–1 hour
Southern Expressway to the Galle exitAbout 1–1.25 hours
Galle exit to Galle FortAbout 15–20 minutes

Expressway tolls are usually included in a private transfer. Check your quote. Traffic around Colombo is heaviest on weekday mornings and evenings.

Option 2: Train

There's no train from the airport to Galle. You'd need to:

  1. Travel from the airport to Colombo Fort station, about an hour by car.
  2. Take the coastal train from Colombo Fort to Galle, about 2 to 2.5 hours.

The coastal train runs along the ocean for much of the way and is a lovely journey, but it can be crowded, and carrying luggage on and off is hard. Many travellers prefer to take the train for fun on another day, without luggage. See Colombo to Galle.

Option 3: Bus

There's no direct bus from the airport to Galle. Expressway buses to Galle run from the south of Colombo, so you'd need a taxi or bus to the bus station first. The total trip takes several hours and isn't easy with luggage.

Option 4: Taxi or ride-hailing app

You can book a taxi at the airport or through a ride-hailing app. It's door to door, but you'll need to arrange transport again for the rest of your trip.

Stops on the way

Most travellers go straight to their hotel after a long flight, but if you have time:

  • Lunch on the coast: your driver can leave the expressway at a coastal town for a seafood lunch.
  • Bentota: a beach resort with river safaris and Geoffrey Bawa's gardens. See Bentota.
  • Kosgoda: turtle hatcheries on the coast. See turtle hatching.
  • Hikkaduwa: a beach town with turtles and coral. See Hikkaduwa.

Taking the coastal road instead of the expressway adds time but lets you see the beaches and fishing villages.

Arriving at night

Many international flights land late at night. The expressways make a night transfer to Galle straightforward, and roads are quieter. If you'd rather rest first, stay a night in Negombo, about 20 to 30 minutes from the airport, and travel the next morning. See Negombo and things to do in Negombo.

What to do at the airport

Make sure your ETA is approved before you fly. See our Sri Lanka ETA visa guide.

Your first days in Galle

  • Day 1: arrive and relax.
  • Day 2: walk Galle Fort's ramparts in the morning, explore the lanes and cafés, and watch the sunset from the lighthouse or the ramparts.
  • Day 3: a beach day in Unawatuna, or a trip to Mirissa.

See things to do in Galle and our Galle day tour.

When to visit Galle

The south coast is best from about December to April, when the sea is calm and the weather is sunny. From May to September, the southwest monsoon brings rain and rougher seas, but Galle Fort is still worth visiting. See the best time to visit Sri Lanka.

Starting your trip on the south coast

Starting on the beach is a gentle way to recover from a long flight. A popular route:

  1. Airport → Galle or Unawatuna (2–3 nights)
  2. Mirissa (2 nights)
  3. Yala or Udawalawe safari (1 night)
  4. Ella (2 nights)
  5. Kandy and the Cultural Triangle

See our 10-day tour, 14-day tour and Sri Lanka itinerary.

Ending your trip on the south coast

Many travellers do the reverse, finishing with a few days on the beach. From Galle, allow at least three hours to reach the airport, plus time for check-in. For very early flights, spend the last night in Negombo or near the airport.

Travelling with children

The expressway journey is relatively short and smooth. Ask for child seats when you book, bring snacks, and plan a break at a rest stop if needed. See Sri Lanka with kids and our family tour.

Luggage and vehicle size

A car suits up to three travellers with normal luggage. A van suits families, groups, and travellers with surfboards or diving gear. Tell us about extra luggage when you book.

Safety on the road

The expressways are well maintained and much safer than the coastal road, which is busy with buses, tuk-tuks and pedestrians. An experienced driver knows both routes well. See is Sri Lanka safe.

A first-time visitor's checklist

  1. ETA approved and saved on your phone.
  2. Flight details shared with your driver.
  3. Hotel booked for your first night.
  4. Some cash or a card for the airport ATM.
  5. Swimwear and sunscreen in your hand luggage.

Galle Fort in brief

Galle Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, built by the Portuguese and greatly expanded by the Dutch in the 17th century. Inside the walls, you'll find colonial streets, churches, mosques, museums, boutiques and cafés, with ocean views from the ramparts. It's one of the most atmospheric places in Sri Lanka.

What the drive is like

Leaving the airport, the road passes through the busy suburbs north of Colombo before joining the expressways. The Outer Circular Expressway skirts the city, with views of rice fields, wetlands and new suburbs. The Southern Expressway then runs through green countryside, rubber estates and low hills, a few kilometres inland from the coast. At the Galle exit, you'll drop down towards the sea, and within minutes you'll see the walls of Galle Fort.

Rest stops

The Southern Expressway has rest areas with toilets, snacks and drinks, which are handy for a break, especially with children. Your driver will know where to stop.

Galle Fort tips

  • Walk the ramparts early in the morning or at sunset.
  • Visit the lighthouse, churches and museums inside the walls.
  • Dress modestly in religious buildings.
  • Book fort hotels early in the busy season, as they're small and popular.

Booking ahead

In the busy season, from about December to March, and over Christmas and New Year, book your transfer and hotel early. Share your flight number so your driver can track any delay.

Is a private transfer worth it?

For most travellers, yes. After a long flight, a comfortable car straight to the beach is the easiest start to a holiday, and the expressways make the journey quick.

Weather on arrival

The south coast is hot and humid all year. In the main season, from about December to April, expect sunshine and calm seas. Bring light clothes, sunscreen and a hat in your hand luggage so you can head to the beach as soon as you arrive.

Travelling the other way

Leaving from Galle to fly home? The same route works in reverse. Allow at least three hours for the drive, and more on weekday evenings near Colombo.

Your driver for the whole trip

Many travellers keep the same driver from the airport for their entire tour. It saves arranging new transport in every town, and your driver gets to know what you enjoy, from the food you like to the sights you want to linger at, and can suggest places you might not find on your own.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Taking the train with heavy luggage straight after a long flight.
  • Forgetting the season. The south coast is wettest from May to September.
  • Not checking whether tolls are included in your transfer price.
  • Leaving too little time for the drive back to the airport.
