Quick answer
For most tourists, car hire with a driver is the better choice in Sri Lanka. Roads are busy and slow, driving is on the left, and self-driving needs extra local permits on top of your licence. A car with a driver costs more than a self-drive rental, but you get local knowledge, no parking or navigation stress, and the freedom to enjoy the views.

| Road stress | None | High: buses, tuk-tuks, animals, narrow hill roads |
| Navigation and parking | Driver handles it | You do |

| Flexibility | High | High |
| Cost | Higher: driver's fee, meals and lodging included in your quote | Lower daily rate |
| Airport pickup | Included with most tours | Collect from the rental desk |
What tourists need to self-drive
Before self-driving, confirm the current Sri Lankan authorization required for your nationality, foreign licence and vehicle class with the Department of Motor Traffic. Do not assume an international driving permit alone is sufficient. A Cabinet announcement confirms a temporary-licence service at Bandaranaike airport; check the current documents and eligibility before relying on it.
What driving in Sri Lanka is really like
- Driving is on the left.
- Average speeds are low. Many roads pass through towns and villages, and hill-country roads are winding. Expressway sections can shorten some journeys, but do not assume an uninterrupted expressway route to Kandy.
- Expect buses, tuk-tuks, dogs, cattle and pedestrians, often all at once.
- Night driving is best avoided outside cities.
Why most visitors choose a car with driver
- Relax and see more. Look out at the tea hills instead of the road.
- Local knowledge. Drivers know where to stop for the best rice and curry, and when to leave to beat the crowds.
- No permits or paperwork.
- Less driving responsibility for families.
- Flexible. It's still your route. Read travelling Sri Lanka with a private driver.
