Practical tips

Sri Lanka Private Driver

Most visitors to Sri Lanka travel with a private car and driver, and for good reason: the roads are slow and winding, and having someone local at the wheel turns long transfers into part of the adventure. Here's what to expect, from your first pick-up to the final goodbye.

Why travel with a driver?

Sri Lanka's sights are spread across the island, and journeys of three to four hours between regions are normal. Buses are cheap but crowded, the scenic railway is partly closed for repairs, and self-driving can be stressful. With a driver you travel door to door, stop wherever you like, and arrive rested.

What a day looks like

Your driver meets you at an agreed time, sometimes before dawn for a sunrise climb or a safari. They drive you to the day's sights, wait while you visit, suggest a good lunch stop, and take you to your next hotel. Along the way, ask to stop at fruit stalls, tea factories, waterfalls or viewpoints. That's what they're there for.

Driver or guide?

Your driver knows the roads, the timing and the country, and will share plenty of local knowledge. At major heritage sites, such as Anuradhapura or Polonnaruwa, a licensed site guide adds detail and history. We can arrange one where you'd like it.

Where drivers stay and eat

Most hotels provide accommodation and meals for drivers, so your driver stays close by each night. Driver accommodation is part of how the trip is planned and quoted, so you don't need to arrange it yourself.

Etiquette and tipping

  • Agree the plan for the next day each evening, including the start time.
  • Tell your driver about any changes early; small changes are usually easy.
  • Let them know if you'd like quieter driving, more stops or air conditioning adjusted.
  • Tipping is customary at the end of the trip if you're happy with the service. Many travellers tip per day of service; give it directly to your driver.
  • Shopping stops are your choice. A good driver never pushes you into shops.
