Quick answer

The easiest way to get from Bandaranaike International Airport (Colombo) to Kandy is by private car with a driver. The journey is about 110 to 115 km and usually takes about 2.5 to 3.5 hours, depending on traffic. Trains between Colombo and Kandy have been suspended since late October 2026 because of an earth slip, and the Kandy end of the line has been affected since Cyclone Ditwah, so check the current status before planning a train. Buses run from Colombo to Kandy, but you'd need to get from the airport to a bus stand first and change, which isn't easy with luggage. With a car, you can also stop at the Pinnawala area, a spice garden or a cashew village on the way.

Kandy is one of the most popular first stops in Sri Lanka, home to the Temple of the Tooth, a peaceful lake and the Royal Botanical Gardens. This guide explains every way to get there from the airport, journey times, the route, the best stops and tips for arriving after a long flight.

Night arrivalsConsider a night in Negombo first

A private car is the most comfortable and reliable way to reach Kandy. Your driver meets you in the arrivals hall with a name board, helps with your luggage and drives you straight to your hotel.

Why most travellers choose a car:

  • Door to door, from the arrivals hall to your hotel in Kandy.
  • Air-conditioning and space to rest after your flight.
  • Stop when you like for food, cash, a SIM card or a view.
  • No carrying luggage on and off buses.
  • Keep the same driver for the rest of your tour.

See Sri Lanka airport transfers and our private driver page.

The route

From the airport, drivers head inland through the towns around Colombo to join the main Colombo–Kandy road (A1). The road passes through Kegalle and then climbs through the hills at Kadugannawa before descending past Peradeniya into Kandy.

SectionApproximate time
Airport to Kadawatha areaAbout 30–45 minutes
Kadawatha to KegalleAbout 1–1.25 hours
Kegalle to KandyAbout 1–1.25 hours

The busiest sections are near Colombo and in the towns along the A1. Traffic is usually lighter early in the morning and late at night. Your driver will choose the best route on the day.

Option 2: Train

The train between Colombo and Kandy is usually a scenic option, climbing through the hills in the final stretch. However, at the time of writing (November 2026), Colombo–Kandy trains have been suspended since 25 October 2026 because of an earth slip, and the Kandy end of the line has been affected since Cyclone Ditwah. Check the current status before you plan to travel by train.

When trains are running, you'd need to get from the airport to Colombo Fort station first, which takes about an hour by car, so the total journey is often longer than driving.

Option 3: Bus

There's no direct bus from the airport to Kandy. You'd need to:

  1. Take a bus or taxi from the airport towards Colombo or Kadawatha.
  2. Change to a bus to Kandy.

Buses are very cheap, but they're crowded and have little space for luggage. Air-conditioned intercity buses are more comfortable but still need a change. This option suits backpackers with light bags. See self-drive or driver in Sri Lanka.

Option 4: Taxi or ride-hailing app

You can book a taxi at the airport or through a ride-hailing app. It's door to door, but you'll need to organise transport again for the rest of your trip, and drivers may not stop at sights along the way.

Best stops on the way

  • The Pinnawala area: the elephant orphanage is a short detour from the main road near Kegalle. If you'd like to see elephants, wild safaris are also a great option later in your trip. See Kandy to Pinnawala and where to see elephants in Sri Lanka.
  • Cashew stalls: the road near Kegalle is known for roadside stalls selling cashew nuts.
  • Spice gardens: some spice gardens on the way to Kandy and around Matale show how cinnamon, pepper and cardamom grow. See spice gardens.
  • Kadugannawa viewpoint: as the road climbs into the hills, there are views over the valleys.
  • Peradeniya Botanical Gardens: just before Kandy, a beautiful place to stretch your legs.

After a long flight, most travellers go straight to their hotel and save the sights for the next day.

Arriving at night

Many international flights land late at night or very early in the morning. If you arrive late:

  • Stay a night in Negombo, about 20 to 30 minutes from the airport, and drive to Kandy the next morning. See Negombo and things to do in Negombo.
  • Or drive straight to Kandy, when the roads are quieter.

Both work well with a private driver.

What to do at the airport

  • Get cash: ATMs and money exchange counters are in the arrivals hall. See money in Sri Lanka.
  • Buy a SIM card: mobile operators have counters in the arrivals hall. See Sri Lanka SIM card for tourists.
  • Find your driver: look for your name board in the arrivals area.

Make sure your ETA is approved before you fly. See our Sri Lanka ETA visa guide.

Your first days in Kandy

Plan at least two nights in Kandy. A typical plan:

  • Day 1: arrive, rest, and walk around Kandy Lake in the evening.
  • Day 2: visit the Temple of the Tooth in the morning, the Royal Botanical Gardens in the afternoon, and a cultural dance show in the evening.
  • Day 3: continue to the Cultural Triangle or the hill country.

When to visit Kandy

Kandy is pleasant all year, with warm days and cooler evenings. The biggest event of the year is the Kandy Esala Perahera, a grand procession in July or August, when hotels fill up quickly. See the Kandy Esala Perahera guide and the best time to visit Sri Lanka.

Onward from Kandy

Sample first-week route starting in Kandy

  1. Airport → Kandy (2 nights)
  2. Kandy → Sigiriya (2–3 nights)
  3. Sigiriya → Nuwara Eliya or Ella (2 nights)
  4. On to Yala or the south coast

See our 7-day tour, 10-day tour and Sri Lanka itinerary.

Kandy or Sigiriya first?

Both are popular first stops. Starting in Kandy gives you a shorter first drive and a gentle introduction to Sri Lankan culture. Starting in Sigiriya gets the longest drive out of the way and makes a neat loop through Kandy to the hill country. Your driver or planner can help you choose based on your flights and the season. See Colombo to Kandy and Colombo to Sigiriya.

Travelling with children

Plan a break every hour or so, bring snacks and something to keep children busy, and ask for child seats when you book. If you land late, a night in Negombo makes the first day much easier. See Sri Lanka with kids and our family tour.

Luggage and vehicle size

Choose a vehicle with enough space for everyone and their luggage. A car suits up to three travellers with normal suitcases, while a van suits families and groups. Tell us about extra luggage, such as surfboards or golf bags, when you book.

Departing from Kandy to the airport

The same journey works in reverse at the end of your trip. Allow plenty of time for traffic, and arrive at the airport at least three hours before an international flight. For an early-morning flight, spend your last night in Negombo.

Weather on the road

The airport and Colombo are hot and humid. Kandy, at around 500 metres, is a little cooler, especially in the evening. Heavy rain can slow traffic in the monsoon months, so allow extra time.

Safety on the road

Sri Lankan roads can be busy, with buses, trucks, tuk-tuks and pedestrians sharing the road. An experienced driver knows how to handle the traffic safely. See is Sri Lanka safe.

A first-time visitor's checklist

  1. ETA approved and saved on your phone.
  2. Flight details shared with your driver.
  3. Hotel booked for your first night.
  4. Some cash or a card for the airport ATM.
  5. A plan for your first few days.

What the drive is like

The first part of the journey passes through busy suburbs and market towns, with shops, buses and tuk-tuks everywhere. After Kegalle, the road becomes greener, with rubber plantations, rice paddies and coconut groves. The final climb through the Kadugannawa pass brings cooler air and views over forested valleys, before the road drops down to the Mahaweli River and into Kandy.

Kandy city tips

  • Visit the Temple of the Tooth early in the morning or for the evening ceremony.
  • Walk around Kandy Lake at sunset.
  • Book a cultural show for traditional dance and drumming.
  • Dress modestly for temples, covering shoulders and knees.

Booking ahead

In the busy season, from about December to March, and around the Kandy Esala Perahera in July or August, book your transfer and hotel early. Share your flight number so your driver can track any delay.

Kandy's highlights at a glance

Kandy was the last royal capital of Sri Lanka and is a UNESCO World Heritage city. Its highlights include the Temple of the Tooth, Kandy Lake, the Royal Botanical Gardens in Peradeniya and viewpoints over the city.

Is a private transfer worth it?

For most first-time visitors, yes: after a long flight, a comfortable car straight to your hotel is the easiest start.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Planning a train trip without checking the current status.
  • Trying to catch buses with heavy luggage straight after a long flight.
  • Underestimating traffic near Colombo.
  • Not sharing your flight number with your driver.
