Quick answer
The easiest way to get from Bandaranaike International Airport (Colombo) to Sigiriya is by private car with a driver. The journey is about 150 to 170 km and usually takes about 3 to 4 hours, depending on traffic and stops. There's no direct train or bus from the airport to Sigiriya. By public transport, you'd need to travel into Colombo or towards Kurunegala, then change to a bus towards Dambulla or a train to Habarana, and finish by tuk-tuk. With luggage after a long flight, most visitors book a car. You can also stop at Dambulla Cave Temple on the way.

Most first-time visitors start their Sri Lanka trip in the Cultural Triangle, and Sigiriya is usually the first stop. This guide explains every option from the airport, journey times, the route, the best stops, and tips for arriving after a long flight.
Airport to Sigiriya at a glance
| Distance | About 150–170 km by road |
| By private car | About 3–4 hours |
| Direct train | None; nearest station is Habarana |
| Direct bus | None; at least one change |
| Best option | Private car with driver |
| Best stop | Dambulla Cave Temple |
| Night arrivals | Consider a night in Negombo first |
Option 1: Private car with driver (recommended)
A private car is the fastest, most comfortable way to reach Sigiriya. Your driver meets you in the arrivals hall with a name board, helps with your luggage and takes you straight to your hotel.
Why travellers choose a car:
- Door to door: from the arrivals hall to your hotel.
- Comfort: air-conditioning and space to rest after your flight.
- Flexibility: stop for food, a SIM card, cash or a break.
- Luggage: no carrying bags on and off buses.
- Start your tour: many travellers keep the same driver for their whole trip.
Many travellers book the transfer as the first day of a tour with the same driver. See Sri Lanka airport transfers, our private driver page and Sri Lanka private driver cost.
The route
The usual route heads north-east from the airport, through or around Kurunegala, then on to Dambulla and Sigiriya. Depending on traffic and the sections of the Central Expressway in use, your driver will choose the fastest way.
| Section | Approximate time |
|---|---|
| Airport to Kurunegala | About 1.5–2 hours |
| Kurunegala to Dambulla | About 1–1.25 hours |
| Dambulla to Sigiriya | About 30 minutes |
Times are approximate and depend on traffic, especially around towns and at weekends.
Option 2: Taxi or ride-hailing app
You can book a car through a ride-hailing app or take a taxi from the airport. This is usually cheaper than a full tour, but drivers may not be familiar with the route or with stops along the way, and you'll need to organise transport again for the rest of your trip.
Option 3: Train and tuk-tuk
There's no railway station at the airport that connects directly to Sigiriya, and no station in Sigiriya itself. The nearest station is Habarana, about 15 km away.
- Travel from the airport to Colombo Fort station.
- Take a train towards Batticaloa or Trincomalee to Habarana, a journey of several hours.
- Take a tuk-tuk or taxi from Habarana to Sigiriya, about 25 minutes.
Trains can be crowded, and schedules and services change, so check the current timetable before you travel. This option takes most of a day.
Option 4: Bus
There's no direct bus from the airport to Sigiriya. You'd need to:
- Take a bus from the airport towards Colombo or Kurunegala.
- Change to a bus towards Dambulla.
- Take a local bus or tuk-tuk from Dambulla, or from Inamaluwa junction, to Sigiriya.
Buses are very cheap but slow and crowded, with little space for luggage. They're best for backpackers with light bags. See our guide to buses and trains vs a driver.
Comparing the options
| Private car | Taxi app | Train + tuk-tuk | Bus | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Time | About 3–4 hours | About 3–4 hours | Most of a day | Most of a day |
| Changes | None | None | Two or three | Two or three |
| Comfort | High | Good | Varies | Basic |
| Luggage | Easy | Easy | Difficult | Difficult |
| Cost | Highest | Medium | Low | Lowest |
Best stops on the way
- Dambulla Cave Temple: a UNESCO World Heritage Site with five painted caves, about 30 minutes before Sigiriya. See the Dambulla Cave Temple.
- Kurunegala: a large town with huge rock outcrops, about halfway. A good place for a break.
- Yapahuwa: a 13th-century rock fortress with a carved lion staircase. It's a detour, so it suits travellers with time to spare.
- Spice gardens: if you go via Matale, you can visit a spice garden. See spice gardens.
After a long flight, most travellers prefer to go straight to their hotel and save the sights for the next day.
Arriving at night
Many international flights land late at night or early in the morning. If you arrive late:
- Stay a night in Negombo, about 20 to 30 minutes from the airport, and drive to Sigiriya the next morning. See Negombo, things to do in Negombo and Negombo to Sigiriya.
- Or drive straight to Sigiriya, sleeping in the car and arriving in time for breakfast.
Both work well with a private driver. Driving at night on rural roads near the Cultural Triangle can also mean meeting wild elephants on the road, so an experienced driver matters.
What to do at the airport
- Get cash: there are ATMs and money exchange counters in the arrivals hall. See money in Sri Lanka.
- Buy a SIM card: mobile counters are in the arrivals hall. See Sri Lanka SIM card for tourists.
- Find your driver: look for your name board in the arrivals area.
Have your ETA (electronic travel authorisation) ready before you fly. See our Sri Lanka ETA visa guide.
Your first days in Sigiriya
Once you arrive, plan two or three nights in the area. The classic plan:
- Day 1: arrive, rest and enjoy the hotel.
- Day 2: climb Sigiriya Rock early, then visit Dambulla.
- Day 3: Polonnaruwa in the morning and an elephant safari in the afternoon.

Tips for the journey
- Book your transfer in advance, especially for late-night arrivals.
- Share your flight number so your driver can track delays.
- Bring snacks and water for the journey.
- Ask for a break whenever you need one.
- Keep valuables with you in the car.
What the transfer costs
The cost of a private transfer depends on the vehicle, the time of day and whether it's part of a longer tour. A transfer that's the first day of a multi-day tour usually works out better value than a one-off taxi. For typical rates and what's included, see Sri Lanka private driver cost.
Travelling with children
The drive is long for young children, so plan a stop every hour or two. Ask for child seats when you book, bring snacks and something to keep them busy, and consider a night in Negombo if you land late. See Sri Lanka with kids and our family tour.
What you'll see on the road
The drive takes you from the busy towns near Colombo through coconut plantations, rice paddies and villages to the dry zone forests of the Cultural Triangle. Look out for roadside fruit stalls, temples, water buffalo in the fields and, near Sigiriya, the first glimpse of the rock above the trees.
Weather on arrival
The Cultural Triangle is in the dry zone. It's hot during the day, so wear light clothes and keep water handy. Short showers can happen at any time of year, and heavier rain is more likely around October to January. See the best time to visit Sri Lanka.
Sigiriya or Dambulla as your base?
Sigiriya and Dambulla are about 30 minutes apart. Sigiriya is quieter, with jungle lodges and views of the rock. Dambulla is a busier town with more shops and is closer to the main road. Habarana is a third option, handy for safaris. All three work well with a driver. See where to stay in Sri Lanka.
Planning your whole trip
If this is your first time in Sri Lanka, our team can plan your full route around the season and your interests, starting with your airport pick-up. See how to plan a Sri Lanka trip and things to know before visiting Sri Lanka.
Departing from Sigiriya to the airport
At the end of your trip, the same journey works in reverse. Allow at least four hours for the drive, plus time for check-in. For an early-morning flight, spend your last night in Negombo, close to the airport. See Sri Lanka airport transfers.
Safety on the road
Sri Lankan roads can be busy, with buses, trucks, tuk-tuks, cyclists and animals sharing the road. An experienced driver knows how to handle the traffic and where to take safe breaks. Always wear a seat belt where available. See is Sri Lanka safe.
A first-time visitor's checklist
- ETA approved and printed or saved on your phone.
- Flight details shared with your driver.
- Hotel booked for your first night.
- Some cash or a card for the airport ATM.
- A plan for your first two or three days.
With these in place, your first day in Sri Lanka will be smooth and relaxed.
Why start in Sigiriya?
Starting in the Cultural Triangle gets the longest drive out of the way early, when you're fresh. It also gives you a gentle introduction to Sri Lanka's history before heading to the cooler hill country and finishing on the beach.
Luggage and vehicle size
Choose a vehicle with enough space for everyone and their luggage. A car suits up to three travellers with normal suitcases, while a van suits families and groups. Tell us about surfboards, golf bags or extra luggage when you book.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Trying to catch a bus with heavy luggage straight after a long flight.
- Planning a big climb on the day you land. Rest first.
- Not having your ETA before you fly.
- Forgetting to share your flight number with your driver.
