Quick answer
The cost of a private car with driver in Sri Lanka depends on your route, the number of days, the vehicle size, the season and how many people are travelling, so every trip is quoted individually. Contact us on WhatsApp or send an enquiry with your dates and route for a personal quote. The price normally includes the vehicle, the driver, fuel, parking and tolls, and the driver's own meals and accommodation. It doesn't usually include your hotels, your meals, entrance tickets, safari jeeps or tips. The exact price depends on the number of days, the distance you'll cover, the season and the vehicle. Ask for a quote with your route, and check exactly what's included.

Hiring a private driver is the most popular way for foreign visitors to travel around Sri Lanka. It's comfortable, flexible and often better value than you might expect, especially for families and groups. This guide explains what a driver costs, what affects the price, what's included, how to compare quotes, tipping, and how a driver compares with trains, buses and taxis.
Private driver cost at a glance
| Price | Depends on route, days, vehicle, season and group size; ask us for a personal quote |
| Vehicles | Car for 1–3 travellers, van for 4–8 travellers |
| Usually included | Vehicle, driver, fuel, parking, tolls, driver's meals and accommodation |
| Usually not included | Your hotels, meals, entrance tickets, safari jeeps, tips |
| Tips | Optional, based on the service you receive |
| Biggest price factors | Distance, number of days, season, vehicle size |
We don't publish fixed prices, because every trip is quoted on its own route and dates. Send us your plans on WhatsApp or through our enquiry form, and we'll reply with a clear written quote.
What affects the price?
1. Number of days
Most drivers quote a daily rate for multi-day tours. Longer trips often work out cheaper per day than very short ones, because the driver's time is used more evenly.
2. Distance
Fuel is one of the biggest costs. A relaxed 10-day trip with short drives costs less per day than a fast route that covers long distances every day. A trip to the far north or east, such as Jaffna or Arugam Bay, adds kilometres.
3. Vehicle type
A car suits one to three travellers with normal luggage. A van suits families and groups, or travellers with surfboards or lots of luggage. Larger groups need a mini coach.
| Vehicle | Travellers | Luggage |
|---|---|---|
| Car (sedan) | 1–3 | 2–3 suitcases |
| Mini van | 4–6 | 4–6 suitcases |
| Large van | 6–8 | More space for luggage |
| Mini coach | 9 or more | Plenty |
4. Season
Prices can be higher in the busy season, roughly December to March, and around Christmas and New Year, when drivers and vehicles are in demand.
5. Driver's experience and licence
A chauffeur who is also a licensed tourist guide may cost more than a driver only, but they can guide you at many sites. See our private tour guide page.
6. One-way trips
For a one-way transfer, such as from the south coast back to the airport, the price may include the driver's return journey.
What's included in a private driver price?
| Usually included | Usually not included |
|---|---|
| Air-conditioned vehicle | Your hotels |
| An English-speaking driver | Your meals and drinks |
| Fuel | Entrance tickets |
| Parking and expressway tolls | Safari jeeps and park tickets |
| The driver's meals and accommodation | Train tickets |
| Airport pick-up and drop-off within the tour | Tips |
| Bottled water (with many companies) | Travel insurance |
Always check the inclusions in writing before you book. Some low quotes leave out fuel or the driver's accommodation, which can lead to surprises later.
The driver's accommodation and meals
On multi-day tours, your driver stays in the same area as you each night. Many hotels have rooms for drivers, and drivers' meals and rooms are normally included in the daily rate. You don't need to pay for them separately unless your quote says so. If you're staying in a remote villa without driver rooms, tell us in advance so we can plan it.
Sample costs for popular trips
The total cost depends on your route, but here's how it adds up:
| Trip | Typical length | What drives the cost |
|---|---|---|
| Airport transfer to Negombo | Under an hour | Short distance |
| Airport to Sigiriya | About 3–4 hours | A full day for the driver |
| 7-day tour | 7 days | The classic loop |
| 10-day tour | 10 days | More relaxed days, similar distance |
| 14-day tour | 14 days | The full island at an easy pace |
Tell us your dates, group size and the places you'd like to see, and we'll send a clear quote.
Private driver vs. other ways to travel
| Private driver | Train | Bus | Taxi apps | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cost | Higher, but shared by the group | Very cheap | Very cheap | Medium for short trips |
| Comfort | High | Varies | Basic | Good |
| Door to door | Yes | No | No | Yes |
| Flexibility | Stop anywhere | Fixed times | Fixed routes | Mostly in cities |
| Luggage | Easy | Can be hard | Hard | Limited |
| Best for | Touring the island | Scenic journeys | Budget travellers | City trips |
For many travellers, the best plan is a private driver for most of the trip, with a scenic train ride where the line is open. See self-drive or driver in Sri Lanka and travelling Sri Lanka with a private driver.
Is a private driver worth the cost?
For most visitors, yes. Here's why:
- Time: door-to-door travel saves hours compared with buses and trains.
- Shared cost: for a family or group of four, a van can cost little more per person than separate train and tuk-tuk journeys.
- Flexibility: stop at viewpoints, spice gardens, tea factories and roadside fruit stalls whenever you like.
- Local knowledge: your driver knows good places to eat, the best times to visit sights and how to avoid traffic.
- Safety: an experienced driver knows the roads, which can be challenging for visitors.
Can I drive myself instead?
Visitors can drive in Sri Lanka with an International Driving Permit and a Sri Lankan recognition permit, but most travellers find the roads difficult: busy traffic, buses overtaking on bends, animals and pedestrians on the road, and steep mountain bends. With rental, fuel, insurance and parking, self-driving often doesn't save much money. See self-drive or driver.
Tipping your driver
Tipping isn't compulsory, but it's customary in Sri Lanka and much appreciated. Many travellers give a tip based on the service they received, and more for an exceptional driver. It's usually given at the end of the trip, in cash, in rupees or US dollars. See money in Sri Lanka.
How to compare quotes
When comparing quotes from different companies, check:
- Is fuel included?
- Are parking and tolls included?
- Are the driver's meals and accommodation included?
- What vehicle is it, and how old is it?
- Is the driver licensed by the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA)?
- Is there a daily kilometre limit, and what happens if you go over?
- What is the cancellation policy?
- Is there 24/7 support if something goes wrong?
A slightly higher quote that includes everything is often better value than a cheap quote with extras added later. See questions to ask a Sri Lanka travel agent.
Ways to save money
- Travel in a group: the daily rate is per vehicle, not per person.
- Plan a sensible route: fewer long drives means lower fuel costs.
- Travel outside the peak season: prices and hotel rates are often lower.
- Mix in a train ride where the scenic line is open, and meet your driver at the other end.
- Book a budget tour with simpler hotels and the same private driver.
What a day with a driver looks like
A typical touring day might start with breakfast at 7 am and a drive of two or three hours, with a stop at a viewpoint or tea factory. You'll visit a sight in the morning, stop for lunch at a local restaurant your driver recommends, and arrive at your next hotel in the afternoon with time to relax. Your driver handles the route, parking and timing, and can suggest the best order to see things. See our private driver page.
Driver or driver-guide?
| Driver | Chauffeur guide | |
|---|---|---|
| Drives you between places | Yes | Yes |
| Speaks English | Yes | Yes |
| Guides you inside sites | No; you can hire a site guide | Yes, at many sites |
| Licence | Driving licence | SLTDA-licensed chauffeur tourist guide |
| Cost | Lower | A little higher |
Many travellers prefer a chauffeur guide, because they explain the history and culture as you travel.

Paying for your driver
Many companies ask for a deposit to confirm the booking and the balance before or at the start of the trip. Payment methods vary, so ask about bank transfer, card payments and cash. Always get a written confirmation with the inclusions, dates and price. See how to book.
How to book
- Send us your travel dates, number of travellers and the places you'd like to see.
- We'll suggest a route and send a clear quote, with inclusions and exclusions.
- Confirm with a deposit.
- We'll send your driver's details before you arrive.
- Your driver meets you at the airport or your hotel.
Hidden costs to watch for
Some quotes look cheap at first but leave out costs you'll pay later:
- Fuel surcharges if fuel prices rise during your trip
- Extra kilometre charges above a daily limit
- Driver accommodation charged separately
- Night driving or early start fees
- Airport parking or entry fees
Ask for a single, all-in daily or total price for your route, so you can compare quotes fairly.
What makes a good driver?
The best drivers are safe, patient and friendly, and know when to talk and when to let you enjoy the view. They'll suggest good places to eat, help with tickets and tell you when to visit sights to avoid crowds. Read reviews, and ask the company how long their drivers have worked with them.
Booking early
In the busy season, from about December to March, the best drivers and vehicles are booked early. Reserve your driver as soon as your flights are confirmed.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Choosing the cheapest quote without checking what's included.
- Planning too many long drives. Sri Lankan roads are slow, so allow time.
- Forgetting the driver's accommodation if you book a remote villa.
- Not getting the inclusions in writing.
- Booking a car that's too small for your luggage.
