Quick answer
Arugam Bay is on the far side of the island from Colombo, so the journey is long. By private car it takes about seven to nine hours, usually via Ratnapura or the Southern Expressway and then Wellawaya and Monaragala. Overnight air-conditioned buses run to Pottuvil, a few kilometres from Arugam Bay, and take around seven to nine hours. There is no railway to Arugam Bay. Most travellers break the journey in Ella or near a national park and arrive the next day.

By private car
A private car is the easiest way to make this long journey, especially if you are travelling with surfboards. Your driver can pick you up at the airport or your Colombo hotel and take you to your guesthouse in Arugam Bay.
The routes
There are two main ways to drive from Colombo to Arugam Bay:
- Inland, via Ratnapura and Wellawaya: this route crosses the southern edge of the hill country through Ratnapura and Pelmadulla, then heads east through Wellawaya and Monaragala to Pottuvil and Arugam Bay. It passes through attractive countryside but has slow, winding sections.
- The Southern Expressway, then north-east: this route uses the expressway towards the south coast, then heads inland towards Wellawaya and Monaragala. It can be faster at quieter times, depending on traffic.
Your driver will choose the best route for the day, depending on traffic, weather and where you want to stop.
Why choose a private car?
- Door-to-door travel with luggage and surfboards
- Freedom to stop for meals, prayers and sightseeing
- An air-conditioned vehicle on a long, hot journey
- The option to break the journey with a safari or a night in the hills
You can book a single transfer, or include this journey in a trip with a private driver.
Break the journey

Seven to nine hours is a long day, especially after an international flight. Many travellers break the journey in one of these places:
Ella
Ella is about three to three and a half hours from Arugam Bay. Spend a night or two hiking, watching trains cross Nine Arch Bridge and visiting tea estates, then continue to the coast. See our list of the best things to do in Ella and our guide to getting from Ella to Arugam Bay.
Udawalawe or Yala
If you travel via the south, a safari in Udawalawe National Park or Yala National Park makes a great stop. Read about safaris in Sri Lanka.
Ratnapura
On the inland route, Ratnapura is known for its gem mines. See our guide to places to visit in Ratnapura and our page on gem mining.
By bus
There is no direct railway, but air-conditioned buses run overnight from Colombo to Pottuvil, the town closest to Arugam Bay. The journey usually takes around seven to nine hours. From Pottuvil, take a tuk-tuk for the short ride south to Arugam Bay.
Daytime ordinary buses are also possible, often with a change in Monaragala or another town on the way, but they are slow and crowded. Surfboards can be difficult to take on public buses, so check with the driver or travel by private car.
Is there a train to Arugam Bay?
No. There is no railway line to Arugam Bay or Pottuvil. Some travellers combine the train with a road transfer, taking the scenic hill country train to Ella and then a car or bus to the coast. Check current Sri Lanka Railways notices for the operating sections and reserved-seat availability; do not assume a continuous Kandy-to-Ella service. Check the current status before you plan.
When to go
Arugam Bay's main surf and beach season runs from about April to October, when the east coast has calm, dry weather and consistent waves at the main surf points. From about November to March, the north-east monsoon brings rain, and many guesthouses close or reduce their services. Read about surfing in Sri Lanka and the best time to visit Sri Lanka.

What affects the cost of a private transfer
The cost depends on the size of the vehicle, whether you carry surfboards, whether you break the journey, any stops you add and the season. If you travel with one of our drivers for your whole trip, this journey is simply part of it. Ask us for a quote that includes everything. See how to book.
Travel tips
- Start early so you arrive in daylight.
- Break the journey if you can, especially on your arrival day.
- Tell us about surfboards so we provide a vehicle with enough space.
- Watch for elephants on roads near Lahugala, especially around dusk. Drivers slow down here.
- Carry cash, as cards are not accepted everywhere. See money in Sri Lanka.
Sample plans: one, two or three days
One long day
Leave Colombo or the airport early in the morning and drive straight through, arriving in Arugam Bay in the late afternoon or early evening. This works if you are short on time, but it is tiring after a long flight.
Two days via Ella
Drive from Colombo to Ella on Day 1, which takes most of a day, and spend the night in the hills. On Day 2, walk up Little Adam's Peak at sunrise, then drive to Arugam Bay in around three to three and a half hours.
Three days with a safari
Drive to Udawalawe on Day 1 for an afternoon safari. On Day 2, continue to Ella. On Day 3, drive down to the coast. This turns the journey into a mini-tour of the south.
Surfboards and luggage
If you are bringing your own boards, tell us the number and size when you book, so we can confirm a suitable carrying arrangement and any equipment available before booking. Board bags should be well padded, as the roads in the hills are bumpy. Many surf schools in Arugam Bay also rent boards, which can save you carrying them across the island.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Going in the wrong season. From about November to March, Arugam Bay is quiet and many places close. Plan for April to October.
- Underestimating the distance. It is one of the longest journeys in Sri Lanka. Break it if you can.
- Driving after dark. Roads near the coast pass through elephant areas. Aim to arrive in daylight.
- Forgetting cash. Many guesthouses and cafés in Arugam Bay prefer cash.
A surfboard changes your transport request
Send the number and length of boards, bags and travellers when requesting a vehicle. A car that seats the group may not have suitable luggage capacity. Confirm how boards will be carried and whether any equipment or charges apply before booking; do not assume a roof rack or extra luggage space is included.
For public transport, confirm the current bus destination, luggage rules and onward connection from Pottuvil. Services and hotel availability can differ outside the main surf season. A route through Ella or a safari park is an extended holiday option, not necessarily a small detour from the direct journey. Allow overnight time if you want to enjoy those places.
What to include in a transfer quote request
Give the exact travel date, pickup and drop-off addresses, number of passengers and luggage. If you need a child seat, extra space, an accessible vehicle or a surfboard carrying arrangement, ask specifically and wait for confirmation. State whether you want a direct transfer, sightseeing stops or several days of driver hire; these are different services and need different quotes.
Ask whether fuel, tolls, parking, agreed waiting time and any additional stops are included, without assuming a universal policy. Site tickets, safari jeeps and guided visits are separate unless listed. For an airport connection, share the flight number and airline check-in requirements and allow an appropriate buffer. Driving times are planning estimates affected by traffic, weather, stops and the final hotel location.
