Quick answer
The most comfortable way to get from Colombo to Jaffna is by private car, which takes about seven to eight hours on the A9 road through Kurunegala, Anuradhapura, Vavuniya and Elephant Pass. The train is a popular alternative: intercity and express trains, including the famous Yal Devi, take around six to eight hours or longer from Colombo Fort, depending on the service. Many travellers break the journey in Anuradhapura, which turns a long day into two easy ones.

By private car
A private car gives you the most flexibility on this long journey. Your driver can pick you up at the airport or your Colombo hotel and take you to your hotel in Jaffna.
The route
The usual route heads north from Colombo through Kurunegala to Anuradhapura, then follows the A9 highway north through Vavuniya and Kilinochchi. Near the end of the journey, the road crosses Elephant Pass, a narrow strip of land between lagoons that connects the Jaffna Peninsula with the mainland. The landscape changes as you go north, from green paddy fields to dry scrubland and finally the palmyra palms that are typical of the Jaffna Peninsula.
Why choose a private car?
- Door-to-door travel, with your luggage
- Stops for meals, prayers and sightseeing as agreed in the travel plan
- An air-conditioned vehicle on a long, hot journey
- The option to break the journey in Anuradhapura
You can book this as a single transfer or include it in a trip with a private driver.
Break the journey in Anuradhapura

Anuradhapura sits roughly halfway between Colombo and Jaffna, so it is the natural place to stop overnight. Spend an afternoon or a full day exploring:
- The great stupas of Anuradhapura, some of the largest ancient monuments in the world
- The Sri Maha Bodhi, a sacred fig tree grown from a cutting of the Bodhi tree in India
- Mihintale, the hill where Buddhism was introduced to Sri Lanka

By train
The railway line to Jaffna, known as the Northern Line, reopened in 2014 after many years of closure. Today, check current services; trains run between Colombo Fort and Jaffna, and the journey is one of the most interesting in the country.
What to expect
- Intercity and express trains, including the Yal Devi, take around six to eight hours or longer, depending on the service.
- A night mail train also runs on the line.
- Reserved seats, especially in air-conditioned intercity trains, are far more comfortable than unreserved carriages and can sell out, so book ahead where possible.
- The train passes Anuradhapura and Vavuniya, so you can break the journey by rail too.
Train services in Sri Lanka change from time to time, so check the latest timetable and any service notices before you travel.
By bus
Overnight buses run between Colombo and Jaffna, including air-conditioned services. The journey usually takes around eight to ten hours. Buses are cheap, but sleeping upright on a long overnight journey is tiring. Daytime ordinary buses are slower and less comfortable.
By domestic flight
Domestic flights have operated between Colombo and Jaffna, turning a full day of travel into about an hour in the air. Schedules and airlines change, so check current availability before you plan around a flight.
When to travel
Jaffna is hot and dry for much of the year. The most comfortable months are often from about January to March, after the north-east monsoon rains and before the hottest months. From about May to September, the weather is hot but dry, and it combines well with the east coast beaches. Between about October and December, the north-east monsoon can bring heavy rain. If you would like to see the Nallur festival, the city's biggest Hindu festival, it usually takes place in July and August. See our guide to the best time to visit Sri Lanka.
What to do in Jaffna
Jaffna feels different from the rest of Sri Lanka, with its own Tamil culture, temples and food. Highlights include:
- Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil, Jaffna's most important Hindu temple
- The Dutch fort and the rebuilt Jaffna Public Library
- Ferries to the islands, including Nainativu and Delft
- Jaffna crab curry and other northern dishes
Our list of the best things to do in Jaffna covers the city and the islands in detail.
Where to stay
Jaffna has a growing range of hotels and guesthouses, from simple family-run places to comfortable city hotels. Staying near the centre makes it easy to visit Nallur Kovil and the fort. See our guide to where to stay in Sri Lanka.
Combining Jaffna with the east coast
Many travellers combine Jaffna with Trincomalee and the east coast beaches, especially between May and September. A typical route goes from Colombo to Anuradhapura, then Jaffna, then down to Trincomalee. See our guide to getting from Colombo to Trincomalee, and our east coast and north tour, which brings these places together.
Is it safe to travel to Jaffna?
Jaffna and the north are open to visitors and are visited by many travellers today. As anywhere, follow local advice, stay on main roads and check your government's travel guidance before you go. Read our guide to whether Sri Lanka is safe.
What affects the cost of a private transfer
The cost depends on the size of the vehicle, whether you break the journey, any stops you add and the season. If you travel with one of our drivers for your whole trip, this journey is simply part of it. Ask us for a quote that includes everything. See how to book.

A sample 2-day journey via Anuradhapura
Here is how many of our guests travel from Colombo to Jaffna:
- Day 1 morning: leave Colombo or the airport after breakfast and drive north through Kurunegala.
- Day 1 afternoon: arrive in Anuradhapura, have lunch, rest during the hottest hours, then visit the great stupas and the Sri Maha Bodhi in the late afternoon, when the evening ceremonies begin.
- Day 2 early morning: climb Mihintale before the heat, or visit more of the ancient city by bicycle.
- Day 2 late morning: continue north on the A9 through Vavuniya and Kilinochchi, a drive of around four hours.
- Day 2 afternoon: cross Elephant Pass and arrive in Jaffna in time for an evening visit to Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil.
What the journey looks like
The changing landscape is part of the experience. Near Colombo, the road passes coconut plantations and busy towns. Around Anuradhapura, you enter the dry zone, with ancient reservoirs, paddy fields and scrub forest. Further north, the land becomes flatter and drier, dotted with palmyra palms, before the lagoons of Elephant Pass open up on both sides of the road.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Trying to do it in one rushed day. It is possible, but breaking the journey in Anuradhapura is far more enjoyable.
- Not booking train seats. Reserved seats on the most popular trains can sell out, especially around holidays.
- Only staying one night. Jaffna and its islands need at least two or three nights to enjoy properly.
- Forgetting that the north is hotter. Bring light clothes, a hat and plenty of water, and plan sightseeing for the early morning and late afternoon.
Allow room for breaks on a long northern journey
A Colombo-to-Jaffna driving estimate depends on the starting address, traffic, road conditions and rest stops. Plan a travel day rather than filling arrival evening with fixed visits. If you want to explore Anuradhapura on the way, an overnight stop is more useful than a brief pause that does not allow time for its spread-out sites.
Before choosing rail, confirm which services run on your dates, their destination and whether the seat type you want is available. Named trains and past timetables do not establish current frequency. For domestic flights, confirm the actual departure airport, baggage allowance and onward transfer before comparing total journey time with road travel.
What to include in a transfer quote request
Give the exact travel date, pickup and drop-off addresses, number of passengers and luggage. If you need a child seat, extra space, an accessible vehicle or a surfboard carrying arrangement, ask specifically and wait for confirmation. State whether you want a direct transfer, sightseeing stops or several days of driver hire; these are different services and need different quotes.
Ask whether fuel, tolls, parking, agreed waiting time and any additional stops are included, without assuming a universal policy. Site tickets, safari jeeps and guided visits are separate unless listed. For an airport connection, share the flight number and airline check-in requirements and allow an appropriate buffer. Driving times are planning estimates affected by traffic, weather, stops and the final hotel location.
