Mihintale, Sri Lanka

Mihintale, about 20–30 minutes from Anuradhapura, is the mountain where Buddhism is said to have been introduced to Sri Lanka by the monk Mahinda. A long stone stairway leads up past ancient ruins to stupas and the Aradhana Gala rock, with wide views. Visit early or late in the day to avoid the heat. You remove your shoes at the top, and the rock gets very hot.
