Practical tips

Sri Lanka Solo Female Travel

Many women travel solo in Sri Lanka and love it: the people are warm, the scenery is spectacular and the island is easy to explore. Some unwanted attention does happen, especially in crowded places. These tips, from our local team, help you travel with confidence.

What to wear

Light, loose clothing that covers shoulders and knees is comfortable, respectful, and attracts less attention, especially away from the beach. Carry a scarf or sarong for temples. Swimwear is fine at the beach but cover up when you leave it.

Getting around

  • Use a trusted driver, a ride-hailing app or a hotel-arranged tuk-tuk, especially at night.
  • On crowded buses and trains, harassment is more likely; travel at quieter times or choose reserved seats.
  • Share your plans and location with someone at home.
  • Keep your driver's and hotel's WhatsApp numbers saved.

Where to stay

Family-run guesthouses are often the friendliest, safest places to stay as a solo traveller, with hosts who look out for you and share local tips. Read recent reviews from other women before you book.

Handling unwanted attention

A firm 'no, thank you' and walking away usually works. Avoid isolated beaches after dark, don't accept drinks from strangers, and trust your instincts. If you feel uncomfortable, go into a shop, hotel or busy café, or ask for help from other women nearby.

Easy first routes

A classic loop of Sigiriya, Kandy, Ella and the south coast is well travelled and easy to navigate. Ella and the south coast towns have lively traveller scenes where it's easy to meet people. Joining day tours, cooking classes and safaris adds company.
