When to go

Sri Lanka in April

April is a lively, colourful month in Sri Lanka. It's hot, it's the season of the Sinhala and Tamil New Year, and it sits between the two monsoons, so much of the island is still very visitable. Here's what to expect.

The weather

April is one of the hottest months, especially in the lowlands and the Cultural Triangle. It's an inter-monsoon month, so afternoon showers and thunderstorms become more common as the month goes on. The south and west coasts are usually still good early in the month, while the east coast starts its season.

Sinhala and Tamil New Year

In mid-April, Sri Lankans celebrate the Sinhala and Tamil New Year (Aluth Avurudu). Families follow auspicious times for lighting the hearth and sharing the first meal, make sweets such as kavum and kokis, and play traditional games. It's a joyful time, but some shops and businesses close for a few days, and roads are busy as people travel home.

The hill country in April

April is the high season in Nuwara Eliya, when Sri Lankan families escape the heat with flower shows, horse racing and festivities. It's fun but busy, so book hotels early. The Adam's Peak pilgrimage season continues until Vesak in May.
