Quick answer

A DMC (destination management company) in Sri Lanka is a local company that plans and runs trips on the ground for overseas travel agents and tour operators: hotels, transport, licensed guides, excursions and 24-hour support. We work as a Sri Lankan DMC and ground handler for travel agents worldwide, with private vehicles, SLTDA-licensed chauffeur and national guides, tailor-made itineraries and clear terms. Send us your client's dates and interests, and we'll reply with a costed itinerary you can sell under your own brand.

If you're a travel agent or tour operator selling Sri Lanka, a reliable local partner makes all the difference. This page explains what a DMC does, what to look for, how Sri Lankan DMCs are regulated, the services we offer and how to work with us.

What is a DMC?

A destination management company is a local specialist that handles everything on the ground for travellers booked by another company. The overseas agent sells the trip and looks after the client relationship; the DMC turns the itinerary into reality in the destination. In Sri Lanka, DMCs are also known as inbound tour operators or ground handlers.

How Sri Lankan DMCs are regulated

In Sri Lanka, inbound tour operators and DMCs are registered by the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) as travel agents. SLTDA's 2026 requirements for travel agency registration include:

  • A fixed office address in Sri Lanka
  • Minimum capital and a bank guarantee in favour of SLTDA
  • Majority Sri Lankan ownership
  • A website showing tours, terms and conditions and emergency contacts
  • Use of SLTDA-trained and licensed tourist guides and approved specialist operators
  • Payment of the annual tourism development levy

When choosing a DMC, ask for its SLTDA registration details. Our registration details are available on request. See our guide to how a Sri Lanka travel company plans your trip.

Popular itineraries for agents

  • Classic Sri Lanka (7–14 days): the Cultural Triangle, Kandy, tea country, Ella and the south coast
  • Honeymoon: boutique hotels, tea bungalows and beach time. See our honeymoon tour
  • Family: shorter drives, safaris and beaches. See our family tour
  • Wildlife: Yala, Udawalawe, Minneriya and whale watching. See our wildlife tour
  • Sri Lanka and the Maldives: see our Sri Lanka and Maldives tour
  • Special interest: Ramayana trail, food, wellness, halal-friendly and train journeys

Seasons to plan around

Sri Lanka has two monsoons, so there's always a dry region somewhere. The south and west coasts and the hill country are usually best from about December to April, and the east coast from about April to September. We plan routes around the season for each client. What makes a good Sri Lanka itinerary

Sri Lanka is small on the map, but road travel is slow. A good DMC builds itineraries that are realistic and comfortable for your clients:

  • Realistic drive times: most journeys between regions take three to six hours by car, even if the distance looks short.
  • Season-aware routes: the right coast and region for the time of year.
  • Balanced pace: not too many one-night stops, and time to relax.
  • Early starts: for climbs, safaris and ancient sites, before the heat.
  • Flexibility: room to change plans if the weather or road conditions change.

We'll advise you honestly on what works and what doesn't, so your clients have a smooth trip and come back happy.

Hotels we work with

We book a wide range of hotels to suit every budget and style, from boutique villas and tea bungalows to beach resorts, eco-lodges, safari camps and good-value guesthouses. Tell us your client's budget level and preferences, and we'll suggest suitable options for each stop. See where to stay in Sri Lanka.

Transport and drivers

All our trips are private, with an air-conditioned vehicle and an experienced driver. We choose the vehicle to fit the group:

Group sizeTypical vehicle
1–3 travellersCar
4–8 travellersVan
Larger groupsMini coach or coach

Our drivers speak English and know the island's roads, sights and restaurants. Many are licensed chauffeur tourist guide lecturers, which means they can guide your clients at many sites as well as drive. See travelling Sri Lanka with a private driver.

Supporting your clients on the ground

We look after your clients from arrival to departure:

  • Meet and greet at the airport, with a name board
  • A welcome briefing with their itinerary and contacts
  • Daily support from their driver
  • A 24/7 phone and WhatsApp line for any problem
  • Quick changes if weather, health or travel plans change

If anything goes wrong, we deal with it on the spot and keep you informed.

Special interest and niche itineraries

We plan specialised trips for agents with particular markets:

  • Wildlife and birding: safaris, whales, leopards and endemic birds
  • Culture and heritage: the Cultural Triangle and the UNESCO sites
  • Wellness and Ayurveda: retreats and yoga
  • Adventure: hiking, rafting, cycling and surfing
  • Faith-based travel: Buddhist sites, the Ramayana trail and halal-friendly trips
  • Accessible and senior travel: gentle pacing and suitable hotels

See our Ramayana tour, halal tour and wellness tour.

Sending us a brief

To help us quote quickly, please include:

  1. Travel dates and flight times, if known
  2. Number of adults and children, with children's ages
  3. Hotel standard (for example, boutique, 4-star or 5-star)
  4. Key interests and must-see places
  5. Any dietary, medical or mobility needs
  6. Your preferred currency and whether you want net or commissionable rates

Why Sri Lanka sells well

Sri Lanka packs a lot into a small island: eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites, leopards and elephants, whales, tea country, beaches on two coasts and a rich food culture. Travel times between highlights are short compared with many destinations, which makes it easy to sell a varied trip in one to three weeks. It also pairs well with the Maldives and India. See Sri Lanka and Maldives itinerary and Sri Lanka trip from India.

Our commitment to partners

  • Honest advice: we'll tell you if something doesn't work for the season or the client.
  • Clear quotes: inclusions and exclusions stated in writing.
  • Reliable service: licensed guides and drivers, and checked hotels.
  • Fast communication: by email, phone and WhatsApp.
  • Responsible travel: ethical wildlife experiences and support for local communities.

Who we work with

We work with travel agents, tour operators, travel advisors, online travel companies, event organisers and corporate travel planners. Whether you send one couple a year or many groups each season, we'll treat each booking with the same care.

Common questions agents ask before booking

Before working with a new partner, agents often want to know who will meet their clients, how emergencies are handled and how changes are charged. We answer these questions clearly in writing before your first booking, and we're happy to arrange a video call to introduce our team. See our about page.

A sample 10-day itinerary for your clients

DayRoute
1Arrive at the airport; transfer to Negombo
2–3Sigiriya and Dambulla; Polonnaruwa and a Minneriya safari
4–5Kandy: the Temple of the Tooth and the botanical gardens
6Nuwara Eliya and the tea estates
7Ella
8Yala safari
9–10South coast beaches and Galle Fort; transfer to the airport

We adapt every itinerary to the season, the client's pace and their budget. See our 10-day tour for a fuller version.

Common mistakes to avoid when choosing a DMC

  • Choosing on price alone. Very low quotes often mean unlicensed drivers, older vehicles or hidden extras.
  • Not checking registration. Always ask for SLTDA registration details.
  • Overloading the itinerary. Too many one-night stops tire clients out.
  • Ignoring the season. A route that works in January may not work in June.
  • Unclear terms. Agree inclusions, payment and cancellation terms in writing.
