Sri Lanka Stopover Tour: 1 to 3 Days From the Airport
St Mary's Church in Negombo, Sri Lanka
Quick answer: A Sri Lanka stopover tour turns a long layover or a short break into a mini holiday. With 1 day, explore Negombo or Colombo; with 2 days, add Kandy and the Temple of the Tooth; with 3 days, see Sigiriya and Dambulla in the Cultural Triangle. Your private driver meets you at Bandaranaike International Airport, keeps your luggage in the car and brings you back in good time for your onward flight. Most travellers need an ETA to leave the airport, so check the rules before you fly.
Free, no-obligation written plan. Tailor-made to your dates.
Flying between Europe, the Middle East, Asia or Australia? Colombo is a natural place to break the journey, and Sri Lanka's highlights are surprisingly close to the airport. Instead of waiting in a terminal, you can walk on a beach, visit a temple, or climb a 1,500-year-old rock fortress, then fly on refreshed.

1 day: Negombo or Colombo The airport is close to Negombo, a relaxed fishing town with a beach, a lagoon, Dutch-era canals and colourful churches. If you prefer the city, drive to Colombo for Galle Face Green, the Pettah market, the Gangaramaya temple and the Lotus Tower. See things to do in Negombo and one day in Colombo.
2 days: Kandy Drive to Kandy, Sri Lanka's last royal capital, stopping at a spice garden on the way. Visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic in the evening, and the Peradeniya botanical gardens next morning before returning to the airport. See airport to Kandy.
3 days: Sigiriya and Dambulla Head to the Cultural Triangle to climb Sigiriya rock fortress, see the painted Dambulla cave temple and, in season, watch wild elephants at Minneriya. See airport to Sigiriya.
Sample 2-day stopover
Day 1: Airport to Kandy Your driver meets you in the arrivals hall. Drive to Kandy (about 3–3.5 hours) with a stop for lunch and a spice garden. Check in, rest, then visit the Temple of the Tooth for the evening ceremony and walk around Kandy Lake.
Day 2: Kandy and back to the airport Morning visit to the Peradeniya botanical gardens or a viewpoint over the city. After lunch, drive back to the airport, timed with plenty of margin for your flight.
Sample 3-day stopover
