Quick answer

Our private Jaffna tour shows you the best of Sri Lanka's far north with your own car and driver: Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil, the Dutch fort, the Jaffna Public Library, the market, Keerimalai Springs, Point Pedro and the island temples of Nainativu. Choose a one-day Jaffna city tour if you are already staying in Jaffna, or a two to three-day tour that includes the drive north via Anuradhapura or Trincomalee. The best time to go is usually from about January to September. Ferry and entrance tickets are paid separately, and every quote is personal.

Jaffna feels like a different country from the rest of Sri Lanka, with its own Tamil culture, colourful Hindu temples, distinctive food and remote islands. Because the sights are spread across the peninsula and islands, a private driver makes it far easier to see them in a short time. This page explains our Jaffna tour options, a day-by-day plan and what's included.

Option 1: Jaffna city tour (1 day)

This tour suits travellers already staying in Jaffna, for example after arriving by train or on a longer tour.

Morning

  • Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil: start at Jaffna's most important Hindu temple, ideally during the morning puja, with drums, bells and incense. Men are usually asked to remove their shirts, and everyone removes their shoes.
  • Jaffna Public Library: see the elegant white library, once one of the largest in Asia, burned in 1981 and later rebuilt.
  • Jaffna market: stalls of vegetables, fruit, spices and fish, and a chance to try local snacks.

Lunch

  • A Jaffna crab curry or a vegetarian thali at a family-run restaurant.

Afternoon

  • Keerimalai Springs and Naguleswaram: freshwater springs beside the sea and one of the island's ancient Shiva temples.
  • Kantharodai: a cluster of small, ancient stupas in a field.
  • Jaffna Fort: finish on the walls of the star-shaped Dutch fort as the sun sets over the lagoon.

Option 2: Jaffna tour (2–3 days)

Day 1: Drive north

Travel from Anuradhapura (about 3.5 to 4 hours) or Trincomalee (about 4 to 5 hours), crossing the Elephant Pass causeway onto the Jaffna Peninsula. Visit Nallur Kovil for the evening puja.

Day 2: The city and the islands

In the morning, see the library, market and fort. In the afternoon, drive across the causeways and take the short ferry to Nainativu, an island sacred to both Hindus and Buddhists. On the way back, stop for a swim at Casuarina Beach on Karainagar.

Day 3: Around the peninsula

Visit Keerimalai Springs, Naguleswaram temple and Kantharodai, then head to Point Pedro, the northernmost point of Sri Lanka, and the Manalkadu sand dunes. Continue south, or stay another night.

Add a day for Delft

Delft is a remote island with wild ponies, coral-stone walls and colonial ruins. Ferries depend on the weather, so allow a spare day.

How to get to Jaffna

  • By car: about 7 to 8 hours from Colombo on the A9, usually broken in Anuradhapura. See Colombo to Jaffna.
  • By train: intercity trains, including the Yal Devi, run from Colombo to Jaffna. Your driver can meet you at Jaffna station. Check the current timetable.
  • From the east coast: about 4 to 5 hours from Trincomalee.

A private driver is the easiest way to reach the ferry jetties and the peninsula's spread-out sights.

When to go

  • About January to March: often the most comfortable months, after the rains and before the hottest weather.
  • About April to September: hot and dry, and combines well with the east coast beaches.
  • About October to December: the north-east monsoon can bring heavy rain, and island ferries may not run.
  • July and August: the Nallur festival, about 25 days of ceremonies and a dramatic chariot procession. Book early.

Combine Jaffna with the rest of the north and east

Jaffna fits well into a longer trip:

Our east coast and north tour and 21-day tour combine these regions in one trip.

Food on a Jaffna tour

Jaffna's food is one of the highlights. Your driver can take you to local favourites for:

  • Jaffna crab curry, rich with roasted spices
  • Odiyal kool, a seafood stew made with palmyra flour
  • Dosa, idli and vadai for breakfast
  • Palmyra sweets and old-fashioned ice cream parlours

See Sri Lankan food to try and our food tour.

Etiquette and tips

  • Dress modestly at temples, and remove your shoes. Men are often asked to remove their shirts.
  • Check puja times to see Nallur Kovil at its most atmospheric.
  • Carry cash for ferries, temples and small restaurants. See money in Sri Lanka.
  • Be respectful when talking about the war years, which affected many families here.
  • Learn two Tamil words: "vanakkam" (hello) and "nandri" (thank you).

Who this tour suits

The Jaffna tour suits curious travellers, second-time visitors, food lovers, photographers and anyone interested in Tamil culture and history. It also suits travellers with family roots in the north and visitors from India. See our guide to a Sri Lanka trip from India. Families are welcome. Island ferries and long drives are easier with older children.

Is Jaffna safe?

Jaffna is open to visitors and welcomes many travellers each year. As anywhere, follow local advice and check your government's travel guidance. Read our guide to whether Sri Lanka is safe.

A sample day on the islands

  • 7:00 am: leave your hotel in Jaffna after an early breakfast.
  • 8:00 am: drive across the causeways to the Kurikadduwan jetty.
  • 8:30 am: take the short ferry to Nainativu.
  • 9:00 am: visit the Nagapooshani Amman Kovil and the Nagadeepa Vihara.
  • 11:30 am: ferry back to the mainland.
  • 12:30 pm: a seafood lunch.
  • 2:00 pm: swim and relax at Casuarina Beach.
  • 5:00 pm: return to Jaffna, with a stop at the fort for sunset.

Ferry times depend on the weather and the season, so your driver will confirm them the day before.

Planning tips

  • Start early. Temples are at their most atmospheric in the morning, and the heat builds by midday.
  • Keep one flexible day if you want to visit Delft, as ferries can be cancelled in rough weather.
  • Book hotels early in July and August, during the Nallur festival.
  • Bring a scarf or shawl for temple visits and sun protection on the ferry.
  • Allow time to eat. Jaffna's food is one of the best reasons to visit.

Why travel with a private driver in Jaffna

The Jaffna Peninsula is larger than many people expect, and its sights are spread out across the city, the northern coast and the islands. Public buses run, but they are slow and don't link the main sights in one day. With a private driver, you can visit the temples at puja time, reach the ferry jetties on time and stop wherever you like for food or photos.

A short history of Jaffna

Jaffna has been the centre of Tamil culture in Sri Lanka for centuries. A Tamil kingdom ruled the peninsula from about the 13th century until the Portuguese arrived in the early 17th century. The Dutch later rebuilt the fort in its star shape, and the British followed. In the late 20th century, the city was deeply affected by Sri Lanka's civil war, which ended in 2009. Since then, roads, the railway and many buildings have been rebuilt, and visitors have returned. A guide can explain this history with care, from a local point of view.

If you only have one or two days in Jaffna, a private tour helps you see much more without rushing.

Where to stay in Jaffna

Jaffna has hotels and guesthouses for most budgets, from family-run homestays to comfortable city hotels. Staying near the centre makes it easy to reach Nallur Kovil for the morning puja and the fort for sunset. Some guesthouses serve excellent home-cooked Jaffna breakfasts. Book early in July and August, when the Nallur festival fills the city. We can suggest places to stay or plan the tour around a hotel you have already booked. See our guide to where to stay in Sri Lanka.

Travelling with a guide

A driver will take you to all the sights, but a local guide can explain the temples, rituals and history in depth. This is especially useful at Nallur Kovil and on the islands, where the stories behind the shrines are part of the experience. Ask us about adding a guide for one or both days.

Photography tips

Jaffna's colourful temple towers, palmyra palms and island landscapes make wonderful photos. Photography is not always allowed inside temples, so ask first, and always ask before photographing people.

Getting around between sights

Distances on the peninsula are short, but roads are narrow and pass through villages, so allow extra time. Most sights are 20 to 60 minutes apart by car.
